What is the mind?

The word mind is used in many different ways, like most words. Words are very mysterious, aren’t they? What would we be without them? All the thoughts, all the ideas, all the beliefs and belief systems are made of words.

Words can be used for lying and cheating, nonsense, telling the truth, singing songs, poetry, yelling to the kids to shut up, arguments, sweet-talking, telling jokes, explaining how to find the way to the post office… The thinking mind is made of words.

We are all in the same boat. We can’t live without the words. However, they also create enormous suffering. This is the human predicament. Animals don’t have this problem.

What are beliefs made of?

Beliefs are not just beliefs. Beliefs are magic spells. Beliefs make you into a Christian, a Muslim, a Jew or a Hindu. Beliefs make you into an atheist, a liberal, a left-winger or a neo-Nazi.

You may believe that you are useless, a complete idiot. You may believe that you are perfectly normal; you may believe that you are saved. You may believe that you are still sleeping, that you are not awake yet. You may believe that life is but a dream. You may believe in guardian angels or reincarnation. You may believe that the observer of all the thoughts in your head never dies.

The spell is broken when you are able to see that your beliefs are just beliefs, theories, mental constructions, words. As long as you’re not able to see this, you will be in a never-ending search for proof that you are right.

Compassion

I don’t like the word compassion. When I hear it, I see for my inner eye “compassionate conservatives” with mild smiles at charity events. Previously such inner images could make me annoyed. Nowadays they make me sad. I can see now that charity is a kind of blindness. Some people fight with all their might against equal rights and justice. They prosper in an unjust world with exploitation and poverty. To hide their selfishness they donate money to charity.

American maples turn red, our maples turn yellow.

Ideas and thoughts

The thoughts and ideas in your head are not yours. Your parents, your friends, gurus, teachers, TV and the advertisement industry, have planted them in you. You have been fooled.

You are not the one you think you are, the world is not what you think it is and you don’t have to do, what you think you have to do.

The truth is, that no one knows for sure, what life is about.

Misunderstandings and mindlessness

After a long series of misunderstandings and mindless decisions, you happen to find yourself, right here, right now, reading this. Amazing, isn‘t it? Where would you be now, without all the misunderstandings and mindless decisions?

Human beings have for thousands of years been possessed by all sorts of mad ideas. Millions and millions of people have sacrificed their lives as well as other people's lives because of thoughts that today are recognized as nothing but madness. Thousands and thousands of crazy religions, ideas and ideologies have made life in to a hell here on earth. (The Aztec's human sacrifices to their hungry fantasy Gods, the inquisition trials, the witch hunts, Nazism, imperialism, slavery, nationalism, the Gulag, the Killing Fields, egoism, religious fundamentalism…Do we need more proof?)

Today it is possible for regular people to step out of all that insanity. We have reached a point in our evolution, which makes it possible for us to see that all mind constructs are nothing but mind constructs. All religions, ideologies, ideas, and speculations can now be taken for what they are, castles in the air. All gurus, preachers, teachers, leaders, professors, popes and mullahs must be questioned, all, including Eckhart. Grown men and women of today should also question their own beliefs. Where is all the bullshit comming from? This is the first step in the awakening process. If you are not able to see this, you are not ready for waking up yet. You still need something to hold to. You still need a leader of the pack to show you the way, someone who can tell you how to think and tell you what to do.

Cage birds don’t suffer. They are all set. That is why suffering is so important.

It is painful to realize that one has been deluded. It is painful to wake up. You don’t wake up by reading books or practicing meditation. You have to suffer to wake up. Suffering doesn’t automatically bring awakening, but without suffering, no awakening is possible. Before you can find peace within yourself you have to get old, and you have to have suffered a lot.

Romans 13

Let every person be subject to the authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore he who resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of him who is in authority? Then do what is good and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain; he is the servant of God to execute his wrath on the wrongdoer.

Genesis 19

Two angels came to Sodom and Lot invited them to his house.

...the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people, to the last man, surrounded the house; and they called out to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.” Lot went out of the door to the men, shut the door after him and said, “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. Behold, I have two daughters who have not known man; let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please…”

Bhagavad-Gita Chapter 2

In Bhagavad-Gita Lord Krishna explains to Arjuna his duties as a warrior.

“To Arjuna whose mind was thus overpowered by pity and grief and eyes dimmed with tears Krishna spoke these words: O Arjuna, whence comes upon thee in this critical moment this depression unworthy of an Aryan, disgraceful, and contrary to the attainment of heaven?
O son of Pritha, yield not to unmanliness; it does not benefit thee. Casting off this mean faint-heartedness, arise, O terror of thy foes.”
